Out and About for October 18th, 2008

This Saturday, October 18, is Sweetest Day. Yes, it’s another “Hallmark Day”, but why not have another day when you can let that special someone know just how much she/he means to you? It’s not too late to pick up a nice card or order some flowers. Some of you were smart enough to order roses through the Three Rivers Lions Club. For just $20, ninety-four of you will receive a dozen roses, thanks to someone who thought enough of you to send the very best.

I lived and worked in the Chicago area for over 20 years. Chicago is known for their sports fans and food. I am still a Cubs fan, even though they are finished for the season. I also love a good “Chicago-Style” hot dog. Chicago-Style dogs are available in the Three Rivers area, and one of the best places to get one of those prize wieners is at Weenie Kings. Weenie Kings is a mobile outfit. Normally, Mike King and his wagon can be found at the corner of West Michigan Avenue and South Douglas Avenue in Three Rivers. He’s there Monday through Friday from 10 A.M. until 2 P.M., and on Saturdays from 10 A.M. until 4 P.M. Sunday, October 19, the day of the annual Color Tour, he’ll be set up for business at Meyer-Broadway Park, on West Broadway, just west of Three Rivers.

Mike has been in business for a little over three years and loves every minute of it. He enjoys seeing his regulars that stop by for a sandwich, some chips and a cold drink. His most popular sandwich is the Chicago-Style hot dog, with the Chili/Cheese Dog coming in second, followed by the delicious Barbeque Pork sandwich. A variety of chips and soft drinks will compliment any sandwich. He tries to open in late April or early May and serves the Three Rivers community until around the first part of November. Since this is an election year, he definitely wants to be available at the Community Center for those going in to cast their vote.

As I mentioned last week, the Three Rivers Area Fall Color Tour happens next Sunday, October 19. Available from noon to 5 P.M., it not only offers the opportunity to take in the spectacular fall colors that abound in the area surrounding Three Rivers, but it also gives everyone the opportunity to visit some of the attractions that many may not know about. Meyer Broadway Park is usually the starting point, if you follow the map, which is included in the brochure available at the Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce in Three Rivers. It is also easy to download at the Chamber’s website at www.trchamber.com. From Meyer Broadway Park, you may visit Corey Lake Orchard, Swiss Valley, and Rouch Outdoor Equipment. Proceeding east into Three Rivers, you still have Hidden Marsh Sanctuary, Coon Hollow Preserve, Carnegie Center for the Arts, Riverbend Farm Antiques, Three Rivers Airport and Scidmore Park. Each of these venues offers something for everyone, whether it’s refreshments, live entertainment or just a place to sit back and meditate. I provides another perfect opportunity to get Out and About without spending a lot of that hard-earned money. A special “THANK YOU” to Waste Management, Meijer, WLKM Radio, Three Rivers Commercial-News and the Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce. Without these sponsors, the Color Tour would be just a thought. They have joined to make it a reality.

A special “THANK YOU” to Chief Dan and the TR Fire Department for allowing me to ride with them in last Friday’s Homecoming Parade. You always make me feel welcome and I truly appreciate it. I guess I’ll never really grow up.

See you Out and About!
