Out and About for October 28th, 2008
October 28, 2008 by Matt Loker
A week from today is voting day, November 4. That means that a week from tomorrow you won’t be subjected to the endless ideas, issues and promises that have been flooding the airwaves for the past many months. The issues will more than likely be forgotten and unfortunately, many of the promises will never be kept. The one promise that should be kept is the one you should make to yourself. That promise would be to make an effort to get out and vote. It doesn’t cost you a thing, but it has cost many fine Americans their lives to insure that you have the right to vote. Please don’t let their efforts go to waste.
Thanks to all of you who had something to do with the Color Tour on October 19. The weather and colors were fantastic. This past weekend probably would not have been as nice and it’s usually a “crap shoot” when it comes to scheduling the weekend to take in all the colors and events. One of the benefits of living in Michigan is that you’re never sure what the weather will be like three days from now. I’m not a big fan of snow and winter weather, and there’s nothing I can do but grab on and enjoy the ride. As long as I’m able to get Out and About, I’m happy.
A week from Thursday, on November 6, the First United Methodist Church Women will hold their Annual Harvest Dinner at the church, 215 North Main in Three Rivers. The ladies remind you that this annual event is always held the first Thursday in November. The dinner, which features their famous Swiss steak, will start promptly at 5:30 P.M. The cost for adults is $8, and children under 13 will pay $3.50. Be conservative with your portions, because you’ll want to save room for a piece of delicious homemade pie.
I hope that I won’t need to mow the lawn again this year. I remind those of you in the same situation that it would be a good idea to run your lawn mower out of fuel, clean the undercarriage, charge the automatic starter, if you have one, and cover it up for the winter. If you don’t care to disturb your neighbors by letting the mower run out of gas, then add some Stabil to the gas tank, let it run for a few minutes, then put it away. Oh yes, now would be the perfect time to get out the snow blower and get it ready for use. If you don’t use a snow blower, get your shovel out and make sure it’s ready at a moment’s notice. I don’t really mind getting rid of the snow, once I get into it. I guess it’s sort of a guy thing.
Now that I’ve thoroughly depressed some of you, you’ll want to remember that in two months, the Christmas holidays will be over, and 2008 will have less than a week to exist. This means that it’s time to start thinking about gift buying for your loved ones. Here’s an idea that you might consider for the nut lovers in your life. The Three Rivers Lions Club will soon sell three-pound cans of gourmet nuts for $20. These are gourmet nuts, which means that you won’t find a peanut in the can. It’s a great price for a very worthwhile cause. Contact any member of the Three Rivers Lions Club, or call 506-2620 for more information or to arrange for purchase.
Will Rogers is one of my favorite sages. I’ll quote him from time to time to close my column. Here’s an example of one of his quotes: “If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.”
See you Out and About!
