Out and About – Week of October 12th

As promised, here is more information on next Sunday’s Fall Color Tour. The tour runs from noon to 5 P.M.and consists of twelve destinations. You may start anywhere you’d like and stay at a destination for as long as you’d like. We’ve taken the tour many times over the years and have several destinations that remain our favorites. Everyone is different, so our favorites may not be the favorites of others.

Meyer Broadway Park, at the corner of Broadway and Roberts Road, is probably the busiest, because of the many attractions. Live music, arts and crafts, hay rides, pony rides, miniature golf, and the annual Scarecrow Fest are just a few of the things that will entertain the entire family.

Scidmore Park, at the corner of West Michigan Avenue and Spring Street, has the ever popular petting zoo. Folks can visit Scidmore Park just about any day of the week, but for the Color Tour, there will be face painting, plus many other activities for children. A special attraction worth attending will be the River Walk Ribbon Cutting Ceremony that takes place at 2 P.M. Attend this and then enjoy a healthy walk along the river.

If you like fresh apples, you’ll want to make sure to stop at the Corey Lake Orchard Farm Market at 12147 Corey Lake Road. All types of fruits and vegetables will be available for purchase. Oh yes, local author Tom Springer will be on hand to sign his  book Looking for  Hickories. The signing takes place at 2 P.M.

Swiss Valley Ski & Snowboard Area, north on Patterson Hill Road, off M-60,  has plenty of slopes and ski equipment for this coming winter. They invite you to check out this venue, where fun is available for the taking.

Rouch Outdoor Equipment, 56653 Abbey Road, is not only a good place to take your lawn equipment in for repair, but also is the ideal place to sample duck and apple butter. Other attractions include chainsaw carving, potter’s wheel demonstration, and arts and crafts.

If you’d like to just get back to nature, then you won’t want to miss visits to Hidden Marsh Sanctuary off Buckhorn Road; Coon Hollow Preserve at Coon Hollow Road and Ferguson Road; and Liquid Therapy Canoe & Kayak Rental, in Three Rivers at 221 South Main.

The Carnegie Center for the Arts, 107 North Main in Three Rivers, is another one of those attractions that’s open almost any time. Admission is always free, and they invite you to stop by and see how much artistic talent there is right here in Three Rivers.

Three Rivers Airport, located on east M-60, is the place to go if you’d like to take in an aerial look-see of the many colors that abound right here in St. Joseph County. The Three Rivers Pilots Association will serve hot dogs and hamburgers, in case you get hungry.

Tedrow’s Florist, 127 North Dean Street in Centreville, will be open Sunday. You’ll want to check out their orchid displays or possibly sign up for one of their classes.

A Civil War display awaits you at Riverbend Farm Antiques on Fisher Lake Road, between Buckhorn and M-60. They also invite you to take a stroll along the Portage River.

I’ve devoted this entire column this week to the Color Tour. I do this because there are many of you who are unaware that this even exists. There is so much to take in and only about five hours to do it. It’s the perfect time for the family to do something together.

Enjoy autumn in Three Rivers by getting Out and About!
