Discussion continues – Extension budget cut

October 29, 2009 by WLKM

In reaction to the fears within the agriculture industry regarding expected cuts by Governor Granholm to the state’s Higher Education that would eliminate funding for 4-H, the MSU Extension Service, and the MSU Agriculture Experiment Station, Bruce Caswell calls upon the Governor to preserve these vital services when she signs the budget.

“During my three terms in the House of Representatives I fought every year to stop the Governor from slashing funding for Extension and 4-H,” said Caswell. “Now she targets agriculture again with threats of cuts to these programs. It is unconscionable that she had singled out Michigan’s leading industry to attack.”

According to recent preliminary findings from the Michigan Department of Agriculture, the agriculture industry has overtaken all other industries in Michigan to become the largest single industry in the state. Michigan agriculture generates over $75 billion each year. The services offered through the MSU Extension Service, 4-H, and the Agriculture Experiment Station provide essential support to this important statewide industry. Elimination of funding for these programs would deprive farmers, families, agribusinesses, and rural and urban communities alike of the crucial assistance they furnish.

From day one, Caswell has supported agriculture through working to fund the Agriculture Experiment Station, Extension Service, and 4-H. He knows the important role these services play in bolstering agriculture in Michigan and supporting Michigan families. That is why the MSU Extension Service honored his staunch support last year with the prestigious state Friend of Extension award, the highest award the Extension Service grants.

“I call upon the Governor to save the very programs that help our largest industry remain strong.” Caswell said. “Do not penalize the agriculture industry through these shortsighted and drastic cuts.”

Caswell is a Republican candidate for the 16th District Michigan Senate seat now held by state Senator Cameron Brown.
