Out and About for December 30th

I’d like to take a moment or two to recognize and thank a few people. As 2008 ends and some of us think of New Year’s resolutions, the one thing that comes to mind is thanking those who normally don’t receive enough recognition. I’m talking about the postal worker, the trash hauler, the utility repair people, and everyone else who do their jobs no matter what the weather seems to do. Did you remember to give your mail carrier a Christmas card? Did you remember to leave some cookies for your trash removal person? I try to thank my mail carrier whenever I see her or him, or I at least say “Hi”. These people get Out and About every day, and sometimes the weather is not very nice.

In case you didn’t notice, the Riviera Theatre has graciously presented some classic movies over this Holiday season, A Christmas Story, The Polar Express, and White Christmas to name a few. Please check the newspaper and the marquee for the special attractions that continue to become available for our viewing pleasure. It’s great to see the marquee lights twinkling again after so many years of absence. Kudos go to Danielle Moreland and her staff for giving us all another reason to get Out and About.

We are officially into winter now, which means that we’ll continue to have days when the skies are overcast and the snow is blowing. Here’s a friendly reminder to use your car headlights, please, whenever the visibility is questionable. I realize that you probably have no problem seeing what’s ahead of you, but I’m sure you also want others to see you approaching.

Before I put the soapbox away for this time, it’s a fact that if you are in the habit of using your cell phone while driving, you might as well be totally intoxicated. In the city limits of Chicago, if you are caught talking on the cell phone while driving, you will pay a hefty fine. That’s not a bad idea. I think it’s more important to use your full attention while driving, rather than to check on Aunt Martha’s ingrown toenail.

This is the final “Out and About” column for 2008. I wish each and every one of you a very Happy New Year. I thank you for your kind words and for your interest in this column. “Out and About” is all about you and this wonderful community where the Rocky, Portage, and St. Joe Rivers meet. I’m proud to live and work here and proud to call it HOME.

I’ll see you Out and About next year.
