Dr. Fred Mathews recognized by SMC

December 15, 2009 by WLKM

Dr. Fred Mathews has been recognized for 45 years of service on the Southwestern Michigan College (SMC) Board of Trustees.

The SMC Board awarded a pin for those 45 years of service during its regularly scheduled meeting on December 8th on the college campus near Dowagiac.

As noted in a story on the SMC website, “Beginning in the early 1960s, Dr. Mathews became the leading voice for citizens who believed in the dream of a college for the community. In 1964, SMC was established by a public referendum and the first College Board of Trustees was elected. Dr. Mathews was one of the six individuals initially elected to the position of College Trustee. He has been re-elected as trustee every six years since 1964. Shortly after first being elected to the College’s governing board, fellow trustees elected Dr. Mathews to the position of Board Chairman, and he has been re-elected as Chairman by his fellow Trustees every two years since.”
