Larry Campbell, 72

Larry L. Campbell, age 72, of Colon, passed away Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, after an extended illness.

Larry was born Feb. 1, 1938, in Three Rivers, a son to the late AJ and Florence A. (Wood) Campbell.

Larry had lived most all of his life in St. Joseph County, graduating from Colon High School with the Class of 1955. He then continued his education at Michigan State University in their Agriculture Program. Larry then served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1956 to 1958.

On Dec. 10, 1965, he married Carol M. Ryan at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Centreville.

Larry had been employed at Walls Packing Co. of Sturgis, at the Mendon Packing Co., at Lear Seigler Co. of Mendon and also had owned and operated Soupy’s Sales in Colon.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Colon, the Colon Grange, St. Joseph County Horseman’s Association and American Trotting Association.

Larry loved time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was an avid Colon sports spectator, and enjoyed watching his grandchildren play.

He is survived by his wife Carol of Colon; three children, Christopher (Cindy) Campbell and Kenneth Campbell both of Colon, and Laurie Halberda and fiancé Dave Klockow of Edwardsburg; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 5-8 p.m. today at the Schipper Funeral Home LTD. in Colon. Funeral services celebrating the life of Larry L. Campbell will be Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010 at 11 a.m. from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Colon with Pastor David Grimm officiating, cremation will follow. Private interment of ashes will take place at a later date in Prairie River Cemetery in Centreville.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials be made in memory of Larry to the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (Kitchen Fund). Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and church.
