Ernest Cain, 74

Ernest Earl Cain, age 74, of Colon, passed away Monday afternoon, Jan. 17, 2011, at his home.

He was born Nov. 9, 1936, in Hillsdale, a son of the late Fredrick and Beryl (Howell) Cain.

Mr. Cain had resided in Colon for the past 30 years.

Ernie’s entire working life was involved in the recreational vehicle and mobile home industry.

Mr. Cain was a member of the New Beginnings Church in Sturgis and a true outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, especially ice fishing. He also enjoyed gardening and most of all sharing the harvest with friends and family. Ernie was always ready to help others in any way he could including snow plowing or mowing lawns. With his grandchildren he was involved in Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.

He is survived by two daughters, Brenda (Jim) Martin and Judith Kurtz of Angola, Ind.; a son, Michael (Lori) Cain of Angola.; six grandchildren, Kourtney Kurtz, Jim Martin, RJ Kurtz, Dave Martin, Kevin Kurtz and Allie Cain;and two sisters, Edna Bowen of Mendon and Linda Cain of Sturgis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Dorothy Musselman, and Ruth Ann Locke.

In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Friday at New Beginnings Church, 63022 M-66, Sturgis, where a memorial service celebrating the life of Ernest Cain will be held at 1 p.m. Friday. Pastor Randy Evans will officiate. Private burial of the ashes will take place at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis at a later date.

The Hackman Family Funeral Homes — Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis is entrusted with the arrangements.
