Bike to Build Event raised money

Last month’s Bike to Build event, a fundraiser to benefit the St. Joseph County Habitat for Humanity, drew nearly 70 participants and raised more than $2,000.

Organizers of the 19th fundraiser said the June 23 event was well attended in light of the fact it took a one-year hiatus in 2011.

Carol Higgins, a member of the county’s Habitat for Humanity board, said four people chose the 10-mile route, and about 20 people each elected to take the 25-, 40-, and 72-mile routes.

An entry fee paid by participants as well as pledges for miles biked helped generate the funds that will go toward the St. Joseph County Habitat for Humanity.

Higgins said a number of the participants were from the east side of the state, while many others came from the Grand Rapids area.
