Stretch of river cleaned up

A five-person team of volunteers gathered about 300 pounds of debris over the weekend from the Prairie River.

The second of five river cleanups this summer involved a 2 1/2-mile stretch of the river Saturday from Burr Oak Road to Middle Colon Road in Burr Oak Township. The event was staged by the St. Joseph County Conservation District.

Saturday’s haul included a 55-gallon burn barrel, two tires, a motorcycle helmet and a number of plastic bottles.

The agency’s next cleanup will be July 19, when it will clear a 3 1/2-mile stretch of the Nottawa Creek and St. Joseph River, from Rawson’s King Mill in Leonidas Township to M-66.

As always, event organizers welcome volunteers to lend a hand. Canoes, kayaks and transportation between the starting and ending points will be provided.
