Out and About – Week of January 9th

Honor is one of the nicest things to have, and it’s also a very nice thing to share. “It’s an honor to do this for you” is a very nice thing to say to someone. Unfortunately, this act is not done enough.
The American Legion Honor Team, from Hice-Shutes Post 170, performs an act of honor every time they are present at a graveside service for a deceased comrade. The team is made up of veterans from all branches of the military and is available upon request. Local funeral homes can help make the arrangements. You can ask any one of the Honor Team volunteers why they do what they do and you’ll get the same reply. “We do this as an act of honor for someone who has served their country. It’s the final expression of gratitude that we can show, and it is a privilege and an honor to do this.”
If you are a veteran in need of help, or if you have some time to spare and would like to be a part of the American Legion, Marine Corps League, Veterans of Foreign War, or the Forty and Eight, send me a note and I’ll put you in touch with the right people, who can help you continue serving with honor.
I’ve been fortunate to visit both Disneyland and Disney World. Both parks are great venues for families with children, or for those of us who have never really grown up. One thing puzzles me about two of the Disney characters. You have Pluto and Goofy. Both appear to be dogs, yet Pluto walks around on all fours, while Goofy walks upright on two feet. I’m not going to lose any sleep over this, but I do find myself wondering, “Hmmmm?” I really do have to get a life.
I received proof once again that someone does read this column, when a reader commented on a column where I mentioned several uses for Vicks Vapo-Rub. She thought there might be someone interested in knowing that if you rub a cut clove of garlic on the bottom of your foot, in a few minutes you would be able to taste the garlic. A perfect example how our body parts are made to be sympathetic with each other. She ended by wondering if you’d get the same reaction by rubbing beer on the soles of your feet. Unlike many things, you might want to try this at home, rather than in your local drinking establishment.
Ten days from now our nation will be under new leadership, when Donald Trump is sworn in as our forty-fifth President of the United States. As proof from the election results, the majority of United States citizens will be happy, while some will not be so happy. After experiencing all of campaigning that was aired this past year, I’d like to close the column this week with as much humor and interesting trivia as I can muster. Perhaps we can look at life in a much less serious manner. Enjoy!
If the woman is always right, and a man is always wrong, then, if a man tells a woman that she’s right, is the man right or wrong?
Don’t like the chapter you’re in? Write a new one. You’re the author of your life.
The past is where you learned. The future is where you apply the lessons. Don’t give up in the middle.
Anything that costs you your peace of mind is too expensive.
Don’t worry if people don’t like you. Most people are struggling to like themselves.
I didn’t change. I just see things differently now.
Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.
Count your age by friends, not years. Count your life by smiles, not tears.
Maturity is when you have the power to destroy someone who did you wrong, but you just breathe, walk away, and let life take care of them.
Thank you for allowing me to share these gems of wisdom with you. My folder is now a little thinner, which means I must look for more “stuff”.
See you Out and About!
