Fundraiser for Michigan vet planned

A fundraiser to help with costs of constructing a house for U.S. veterans injured in combat will take place this weekend in Park Township.
The eighth annual Homes For Our Troops hog roast fundraiser will be 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Jim and Peggy Fassett’s farm, 54010 Parkville Road.
Peggy Fassett said the recipient of this year’s event is Sgt. Michael Gower, a Grand Rapids-area resident. Gower 10 years ago was in a tank that rolled over a two-ton improvised explosive device in Baghdad. He suffered a back injury, and both feet, his tibia and fibula were fractured as well. He also suffered traumatic brain injury.
Fassett said Gower will be in attendance Saturday.
There is no cost to attend but donations will be accepted. Last year’s event raised $14,000 and drew more than 300 people.
A summary of Gower is available through a search of his name on the Homes For Our Troops website: www.hfotusa.org.
