Girl dies after being struck by vehicle

A 2-year-old Indiana girl died over the weekend after she was struck by a car at a relative’s house in Cass County’s Mason Township.

Sheriff Richard Behnke said the incident occurred at 7 p.m. Sunday in the 20000 block of Old 205.

Witnesses told deputies that the family was having a birthday party at the residence. A family member was pulling into the driveway when 2-year-old Nayla Ryans was struck by the GMC pickup and run over by a vehicle driven by 64-year-old Betty Utt, also of Elkhart.

Family members began performing CPR until medical personnel arrived. Ryans was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where she was pronounced deceased.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash.
