Occupant trapped in vehicle

Sturgis Police and Fire responded last week to an incident involving a vehicle that had rolled down the embankment of an abandoned railroad bed.

According to a department media release, rescue personnel responded at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday to a remote location on the former Indiana Northeastern Railroad bed, just west of the former crossing at Big Hill Road in Fawn River Township.

Investigators said the vehicle was traveling eastbound, left the railbed and rolled approximately 50 feet down an embankment.

The vehicle came to rest on its side with its roof against a tree, with one person trapped inside the vehicle.

Rescue personnel said deep snow and the remoteness of the scene made access difficult, prompting first-arriving firefighters to carry extrication equipment to the accident site until a four-wheel drive vehicle arrived to transport additional equipment down the tracks.
