Top local news stories of 2017

Last week’s passing of Mendon Community Schools Superintendent Roger Rathburn was ranked “Top News Story of the Year” according to the Sturgis Journal.

In its annual ranking, the newspaper said Rathburn’s passing had the greatest impact of any other local news story last year because of the number of people who knew him and his untimely passing.

Rounding out the top five for 2017 were a massive fire that destroyed an entire block of downtown LaGrange in September, Glen Oaks opening a residence hall, a Portage man accused of a double murder that included a Florene Township man in July, and the firing of and subsequent lawsuit filed by former Community Mental Health director Liz O’Dell.

Other stories in the top 10 include long-awaited repairs to Constantine Road, a solar farm proposal in Mendon and Nottawa townships and local municipalities developing marijuana ordinances.
