Two dead in house fire near Mendon

Two men died early Wednesday in a house fire in the 53000 block of Silver Street in Mendon Township.

Authorities said one body was found in the basement, the other on the first floor.

Michigan State Police investigators said the cause of the fire is undetermined.

Identities of the two men have not been released, pending notification of next of kin.

St. Joseph County Sheriff’s department officials said the home was owned by a local dairy farm, and the men were employees.

The blaze was reported around 3:30 a.m. By the time firefighters arrived, the home was fully engulfed and entrance into the structure was impossible.

A portion of Silver Street was closed until about 1 p.m.
