Sturgis man arraigned on multiple charges

St. Joseph County Prosecutor John McDonough has authorized seven charges against Fernando Mendoza Cruz.

The 37-year-old Sturgis man was charged Friday with three counts of kidnapping, and one count for each offense of fleeing and eluding, carrying a concealed weapon, felony firearm and domestic violence.

He remains in the St. Joseph County Jail with a $250,000 cash/ surety bond.

An affidavit states police were called in response to an act of domestic violence in the 100 block of Pioneer Street in Sturgis.

The victim told officers an argument started and Cruz allegedly punched her in the mouth, and hit her with the cord of a curling iron, authorities said.

Cruz then left the home, with three children, ages 2, 4 and 5 years. Another Sturgis officer observed Cruz driving and attempted to stop him on Franks Avenue.

Cruz then fled from the officer, reaching speeds of 100 mph and failing to obey stop signs, officers said.

The victim had an active personal-protection order against Cruz. Police said Cruz is the father of all three children, but the victim has full custody.
