News from county commissioners meeting

The St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners this week made an appointment to the county’s Transportation Authority Board.

During Tuesday’s meeting, Sarah Beckle was added to the CTA panel.

In other action, commissioners agreed to make an exception to the county hiring freeze in anticipation of a retirement within the treasurer’s office.

Deputy treasurer Mary Ives is planning to retire at the end of January, leaving vacant a position that treasurer Judie Ratering said is essential to the county. She said most of the duties cannot be assigned to other clerks, and the duty involves managing online banking and verification of transfer of funds on a daily basis.

Commissioners on Tuesday also accepted the Commission On Aging’s annual report.

In addition, county administrator Teresa Doehring, a lifelong Mendon resident, acknowledged Mendon High School’s varsity volleyball team and the Division 4 state title it won last week.
