Police investigate armed robbery in Constantine

Law-enforcement officials from Constantine, St. Joseph County and Michigan State Police are investigating an armed-robbery incident that took place over the weekend in the Whispering Pines II mobile home park.

Constantine Chief Mark Honeysett said central dispatch, shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday, received a call reporting someone had been shot. Officers ultimately determined the caller, who was bleeding from a wound on his head, had actually been struck with a handgun and not from a fired round.

The victim and witnesses said two people wearing Halloween masks and armed with handguns entered a residence where a card game was in progress. The half dozen card-game participants were ordered to the floor, and the suspects began to take wallets, cell phones and contents of pockets from each before fleeing the scene.

During the incident, one of the victims grabbed at the handgun held by one of the suspects but the suspect pulled the weapon out of the victim’s hand and struck him on the head with it. Two shots were fired in the trailer but no one was struck.

The suspects fled the scene in what appeared to be an older-model, dark blue or black Dodge Caravan.

All of the victims were of Hispanic origin and some spoke little English, investigators said.
