Sheriff’s deputy dragged, suspect arrested

An arrest was made last week following an incident in which a Cass County sheriff’s deputy was dragged a short distance by a suspect trying to flee in a vehicle from authorities.

Sheriff Richard Behnke said the situation unfolded shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday, when deputies responded to an in-progress theft of a travel trailer on Savage Road in Marcellus Township.

A short time later, deputies were able to locate one of the suspects on May Street in Edwardsburg. While authorities were questioning the suspect, he fled in his vehicle, dragging one deputy for a short distance, Behnke said.

The vehicle was eventually stopped by Elkhart Police, whose officers arrested the suspect.

Cass County deputies, meanwhile, returned to the Marcellus Township property and located other stolen property believed to have been taken from locations in Indiana and elsewhere in Cass County.

Two people at the residence were arrested on outstanding warrants as well as charges related to the stolen property, Behnke said.
