Solar project petition signatures turned in

There’s a chance Mendon Township’s voters will have a say in the fate of an ordinance related to solar panel developments.

With three days to spare, members of a group opposed to the ordinance approved a month ago by the Mendon Township Board submitted a petition that included more than 300 signatures – about 125 more than the required minimum, according to the group’s leader, Kayleen Grand.

The petition was turned in Wednesday morning to township clerk Donna Cupp.

Starting in early April, a team of about 15 people fanned out across Mendon Township to collect signatures from registered voters who participated in the 2016 presidential election.

Minnesota-based Geronimo Energy is behind the White Pine Solar project, slated for a 200-acre area on the north side of Prairie Corners Road at Bucknell Road.

If developed, it would be the first solar-panel operation in St. Joseph County.

Cupp said she reviewed the petitions at the county clerk’s office Wednesday morning and afternoon but she declined to state details about the process or what it yielded. She said she would prefer to discuss the matter with township attorney Joe Haas before making additional comment.
