Investigation continues into remains found

Sturgis Department of Public Safety Director Geoff Smith has provided more information related to possible human skeletal remains discovered Tuesday in Sturgis Township.

An investigation that was aided by Michigan State Police Crime Lab and Western Michigan University’s Anthropology Unit led to the remains being taken for further examination and carbon dating.

Additional remains were found in the general vicinity Wednesday morning and are also being collected for examination.

Smith said information provided by St. Joseph County Veterans Affairs Coordinator Stoney Sumney indicates that it is possible – according to historical records – the remains may be of original settlers to Sturgis.

Smith said ongoing research is being conducted to validate the possibility, and if there happens to be any Civil War connections with a possible burial site.
