Third river cleanup a success

The third of six river cleanup events this summer was declared a success by its organizers.

Staged Saturday on the Prairie River, the cleanup centered on a 3.8-mile stretch from Centreville Canoe Park to Hoshel Road.

Event coordinator Shaun Grace said a team of 18 volunteers and four staff members took part. Their combined efforts netted a lawn chair, metal tubing, a fire extinguisher, foam insulation, numerous cans and bottles, a metal table and five flip-flops.

The route is believed to be one of the top three most heavily kayaked and canoed stretch of any river in St. Joseph County.

The next St. Joseph County Conservation District-sponsored cleanup will be on the Prairie River, starting at the Hoshel Road Canoe Park in Lockport Township and concluding at Sauganash Golf Course.

The 4.5-mile route – the longest of the season – starts at 9:30 a.m. July 13.
