Large crowds for Mendon Riverfest

Organizers of the 32nd annual Mendon Riverfest declared the three-day community celebration a success.

Starting with a dozen acts in Thursday’s lip-sync contest and ending with a crowd-pleasing fireworks display Saturday, the 2019 Riverfest featured strong crowds throughout the balance of the day Friday and Saturday.

Riverfest chair Spencer Howe said more than 80 teams participated in Friday’s cornhole tournament before additional teams had to be turned away due to the larger-than-expected turnout. In the end, the team of Tom Walfke Jr. of Leonidas and Chase McNall of Albion, Ind., won the event.

Other highlights included a fishing tournament, kayak poker run, trivia contest and canoe swamp. Saturday’s canoe swamp was won by Mendon natives Julia Sutter and Connor Henckel, and their Central Michigan University friend, Maddi Fegan.
