Lillywhite will serve remainder of Balk’s term

A three-member panel of county officials selected Mark Lillywhite to serve the 11 remaining months of Brad Balk’s term as sheriff.

Balk recently announced he will retire Jan. 31, 11 months before the conclusion of the four-year term to which he was elected in November 2016.

By law, the appointment to fulfill the balance of Balk’s term was to be decided by a panel comprised of county clerk Lindsay Oswald, probate judge David Tomlinson and prosecuting attorney John McDonough.

After interviewing Lillywhite and Florence Township resident Gordon Evilsizor this week, the panel concurred that Lillywhite was the most suitable person to complete the term on an interim basis.

Lillywhite, who has served as undersheriff since 2009, has already filed his paperwork to run for sheriff in next year’s election. Evilsizor is also a candidate for the post.

According to a media release, the interview team agreed Lillywhite has been instrumental in every aspect of the sheriff’s office as second in command.

The release added that Lillywhite’s actions as undersheriff have demonstrated his leadership abilities and willingness to pursue innovative solutions for the county.
