Cass County standoff ends in arrests

Two people were arrested early Thursday following a standoff in Cass County’s Milton Township.

Sheriff Richard Behnke said members of the county’s Fugitive Apprehension Street Team responded at 1:35 p.m. Wednesday to the 33000 block of Redfield Street, in conjunction with the U.S. Marshal’s Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force

They were attempting to take into custody a wanted fugitive from LaPorte County, Ind. The fugitive was wanted on charges stemming from petition of revocation of bond and failure to appear on two separate incidents.

FAST officers encountered the fugitive, a female and a young child inside the residence. Behnke said the fugitive presented a firearm, resulting in officials being forced to revert to a position of advantage.

State police communicated with the fugitive for several hours before he released the child from custody shortly after 10 p.m.

At 2:30 a.m., a tactical team breeched the attached garage door of the residence and 15 minutes later, the fugitive and female exited the residence.

They face a variety of criminal charges in Cass County.
