County commission looking at future financial state

St. Joseph County Commissioner Ken Malone said the county might want to look ahead and start thinking about its financial state as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During Tuesday’s meeting, Malone said the interruption of day-to-day business has the potential to financially impact all aspects of commerce, including the county and its projected revenue for 2020.

Malone said the county is going to be faced with revenue cuts as a result of COVID-19. He added that he is not expecting things to turn around quickly and as a result, the county won’t be able to maintain budget levels as projected when the 2020 budget was approved in December.

His points came on the heels of a discussion about extending pay for county employees either working from home or at home and not working.

The board originally agreed to pay all courthouse employees through April 13.

At the request of commissioner Allen Balog, a motion to extend payment to employees through April 30 was approved Tuesday.
