Organizers discussing fate of festivals

The fate of the 2020 community festival season is unclear at the moment, but all eyes are on Three Rivers and Sturgis to see what direction organizers of their respective celebrations take.

The two earliest festivals in St. Joseph County, the Three Rivers Water Festival and Sturgis Fest, are the only June events of the eight community celebrations.

Cathi Garn Abbs, executive director of the Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce, said she expects the chamber board to decide as soon as next week whether to proceed with Sturgis Fest 2020. It is slated to run June 20-27.

Christy Trammell, director of the Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce, said there is nothing yet to report regarding the city’s Water Festival. Slated for June 18-20, Water Festival is always the county’s first festival of the season.

Trammell said the option of postponing is possible but Water Festival organizers plan to consult with authorities in May to help come to a decision.

Vickie Allen, chair of Centreville’s Covered Bridge Days, said it’s not too soon to start talking about what would be an appropriate course of action. Though Covered Bridge Days isn’t until July 17-18, Allen said her committee will sit on the fence until Three Rivers and Sturgis make a decision.

Abbott’s Magic Get-Together is the first week of August. Abbott’s Greg Bordner said his gauge will be the Fourth of July; if there’s a parade and fireworks in Colon July Fourth, then the odds are good the Get-Together will proceed, Bordner said.
