Sturgis has most COVID-19 cases in county

Most confirmed COVID-19 cases in St. Joseph County have come from the Sturgis area, according to information released last week by the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency.

Of 303 laboratory-confirmed cases, those in Sturgis accounted for 197. Next closest was Three Rivers, with 33. It was followed by 21 in White Pigeon, 15 in Constantine, a dozen in Colon, nine in Burr Oak, seven in Mendon, and four each in Centreville and Leonidas.

All data were presented by zip code.

Rebecca Burns, health officer at the agency, said a combination of factors accounted for the high numbers in Sturgis: a manufacturing facility had some cases and closed for cleaning; people who work across the state line at facilities where outbreaks have occurred; and residents engaging in activities when people have gathered.

As of Sunday, St. Joseph County had 314 COVID-19 cases and five deaths.

Burns said some of the cases are due to people not staying at home, not practicing social distancing or not wearing masks.
