Sturgis Public Safety Director resigns

Sturgis Public Safety Director Geoff Smith resigned Wednesday evening following a city commission closed session.

After a return to open meeting, commissioners approved a resignation and separation agreement with Smith.

The agreement allows Smith to purchase one year of service credit following his resignation. With the service credit purchase, Smith will be able to receive a pension benefit at what would have been his eligible retirement date in 2021.

With approval of the resignation and separation agreement by commissioners, Smith’s resignation is effective Wednesday of this week.

He was placed on administrative leave by the city Aug. 16 following an off-duty automobile accident that resulted in him being charged with operating while intoxicated by the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department.
