Out and About – Week of September 7th

I’ve been doing this column for over fourteen years. A lot has changed over the years, some good and some not so good. I’ve kept a daily journal for probably the last ten years. Every so often, I’ll look back to see what was happening five years ago on a certain date. I’ve kept a copy of all my columns since the first one in April 2006. I do the same thing with the columns. I find it interesting to look back and see what was going on two or three years ago this week. Join me, please as we look back two years ago this week.

September 11, 2018

Seventeen years ago on this date, the United States was attacked in New York City,

Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania. On this day, the nation was drawn closer together

than it had been for years. American flags were displayed everywhere and they remained

displayed, because everyone was proud to be an American and everyone loved America.

The St. Joe County Fair was planning to open within the next week. Everyone was looking

forward to attending this annual event, because of the Midway, the tasty food, and the many

exhibits on display in the many barns. Harness racing was a popular attraction, and for that

week, the population of Centreville grew by leaps and bounds, because hundreds of campers

spent the week on the fairgrounds.

The County Fair has been canceled for this year because of the Covid pandemic. Hopefully it will return next year along with other festivals that make St. Joseph County the place to be for family fun.

2020 will be remembered as the year of Covid-19. It will also be remembered as a year of political unrest. Protesting has always been a right that we have as Americans, but somehow we’ve forgotten how to protest properly and with respect for one another. A phrase that I once told my son went something like this, “I might not always agree with what you say, but I’ll defend to my death, your right to say it.”

I’ve done some advertising over the past several years, but have toned it down considerably over this last year. If you’re in need of a Notary Public, my phone number is on a coffee mug at a local cafe. Stuart H. Britt once said, “Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you’re doing, but nobody else does.” I don’t wink much anymore, but I do believe in supporting locally owned businesses. Keep your money in our own community. Doing so benefits everyone.

We are less than two months away from the Elections. Take time and listen to both sides of the story so that you will be able to make the right decision. This is a democracy and we all have that right to choose who we want to lead our nation. Laurence J. Peter is quoted as saying, “Democracy is a process by which the people are free to choose the man/woman who will get the blame.” If you don’t vote, you have no right to complain about the results.

My final quote for this week has to do with the current events that we witness on a daily basis. Clarence Darrow says it best. “History repeats itself; that’s one of the things that’s wrong with history.”

See you Out and About!
